PISHIN: An eight-month-old baby was tested positive for poliovirus in Pishin on Monday morning. Samples of the baby were collected by health officials a few days back. The baby has contracted the crippling virus, the laboratory reported, a health officer who declined to be named told daily Quetta Voice.

With the confirmation of a new polio case, the number of cases during the current year rises to 6 in Balochistan. Last year the province had reported 12 cases of poliovirus.

The reason behind this fresh case of polio is yet to be ascertained, he said. The anti-polio teams have been campaigning in Pishin and all parts of Balochistan for last around two decades to eradicate the crippling virus. However, the crippling virus is yet to be eradicated despite repeated campaigns.

Refusal on the part of parents in Pishin, Killa Abdullah and Quetta districts of Balochistan remained a challenge for the health officials in their fight against the polio virus.
