QUETTA: In violation of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) order, the provincial government has given an officer of the Balochistan Civil Service (BCS) officer look-after charge of the Inspector General of Prisons. The BHC had passed an order during 2015 that the IG prisons should be appointed from within the department since the position needs a skilled, professional, and experienced officer who can deal with prisoners.

The Balochistan government the other day posted an officer of the provincial home and tribal affairs department as the IG prisons, sources in the home department revealed. The court had also mentioned in the said order that if a suitable officer was not available then the government can appoint any PSP officer from Police.

A PSP officer served as an IG prison for two years in Balochistan and now his services have been handed over to the federal government after completion of his ensure, sources mentioned. Despite the presence of one grade-20 and two grade-19 officers in the prisons department, the government-appointed an officer from the BCS, they informed.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan upheld the judgement of the BHC when challenged by the provincial government, sources mentioned. The former IG prisons Shuja Kasi had challenged the appointments of BCS and PCS officers as chiefs of the prisons department earlier.
