Education Desk :

Prevailing cold weather and baton charge failed to stop female teachers from protesting outside Quetta Press Club. Carrying children in their laps, women again gathered outside the press club in support of their demands.

“We want justice”, Farzana, a primary teacher wearing a traditional Balochi dress demanded. Despite cold weather, dozens of female school teachers established a protest camp outside the press club.

Dozens of baton-wielding female policewomen deployed

Dozens of baton-wielding female policewomen in black uniforms deployed to maintain the order during the protest of female teachers. On Monday evening, female teachers and policewomen clashed outside the Balochistan Assembly.

“One of our colleagues injured during the clash”, Mehvish bibi, a protester told Quetta Voice. She said the government was deliberately complicating the issue of female teachers. “We are without salaries for the last eight months”, Mevish lamented.

Children are also part of the protest demonstration by their mothers.

Legislators of Balochistan National Party (Mengal) Sanaullah Baloch and Akhtar Hussain Langove also joined the protesting women. “Government is deliberately complicating the issue of teachers”, Sanaullah Baloch said.

1,500 teaches recruited by GPE

Around 1,500 teachers most of them female recruited under the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) program in Balochistan in 2015. The Balochistan government had made 1,000 girls schools across the province after the appointment of female teachers.

The government had agreed to pay salaries to teachers

The government had agreed with GPE that it would pay the salaries of the employees after the expiry of the project in Balochistan. However, the provincial government has recently turned down the request of teachers for payment of salaries.

Balochistan education minister, Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind had visited the camp of protesting female teachers and assured them permanent orders almost a month ago.
