Speakers pay rich tribute to Balochistan martyred journalists

QUETTA: Speakers at a seminar paid rich tribute to martyred journalists of Balochistan on Saturday. Political leaders, journalists, lawyers, writers, and authors paid rich tribute to the martyred journalists for their sacrifices.

Opposition leader in Balochistan Assembly, Malik Sikandar Advocate, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) Central President, Shehzada Zulfiqar, Vice Chairman Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Zahoor Shahwani Advocate, President Quetta Press Club, Abdul Khaliq Rind, President Balochistan Union of Journalist (BUJ), Salman Ashraf, senior journalist, Raza ur Rehman and others also addressed the Youm e Shuhada day function.

The speakers said martyred journalists sacrificed their lives to uphold the banner of freedom of expression and free press in the country. “Free and impartial press imperative for strong democratic system”, Malik Sikandar Advocate said. He underlined the need for freedom of expression for the development and prosperity of the country.

“Journalists in Balochistan laid down their lives for truth”, Shehzada Zulfiqar, the PFUJ President said. He informed that 44 journalists were martyred in Balochistan during the last two decades.

The speakers also opposed the proposed Media Development Authority Bill in their speeches. They termed it an attempt on the part of the government to curtail freedom of expression. The speakers vowed to continue the struggle for freedom of expression and a free press in the country.

“We salute Balochistan’s martyred journalists”, Zahoor Shahwani advocate said. He said civil society stands by journalists of Balochistan in the struggle for impartial and balanced reporting.
