Syed Ali Shah, Manan Mandokhail :
For the first time in the medical history of Balochistan, doctors conducted a successful open-heart surgery at the civil hospital Quetta. “We successfully conducted an open-heart surgery on this patient”, Dr. Asmat Achakzai, one of the doctors who participated in the operation process said.
Dr. Achakzai and Dr. Abdul Wasey have done post-scholarship after passing their FCPS examination in 2020 in Karachi. “We were trained in the National Institute of the Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) Karachi to conduct open-heart surgeries”, Dr. Asmat mentioned.
Patients from Balochistan used to go to Karachi and spend huge amounts to conduct open-heart surgeries in the past. “My father has recovered now”, a young attendant of a patient from Noshki said. “We took our patient to Rawalpindi and Karachi and now came back”, he said.
Earlier there were no trained staff, anesthetists, and surgeons to conduct open-heart surgeries at civil hospital Quetta.

“Cardiac surgery is a teamwork, which is not possible by one surgeon”, Dr. Abdul Wasey mentioned. The Balochistan health department, the medical superintendent of civil hospital Quetta, Dr. Amin Khan Mandokhail provided all possible support to the doctors to ensure the success of the procedure.
So far, the hospital administration has provided the required items for conducting only three operations, Dr. Wasey informed. He said the government has assured provision of more required equipment/things for conducting more operations.
“Dreams came true”, Dr. Wasey said. He said five years back, they went to NICVD Karachi to get training and education to conduct open-heart surgeries. “That day came, I am very happy”, Dr. Wasey said.

Balochistan health minister, Syed Ehsan Shah has appreciated the doctors for conducting two successful heart surgeries. “Present government has determined to improve health conditions in Balochistan”, Mr. Shah stated.
He said young doctors would be encouraged and supported to serve the ailing humanity in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan.
The Balochistan government has allocated substantial funds for the health sector. However, the health sector paints a bleak picture in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan and the patients are forced to go to Karachi for medical treatment.
