Suspension of cellular services compound problems of flood affectees

Syed Muhammad Qaseem:

QUETTA: The suspension of cellular services has disrupted the routine lives of people in each part of Balochistan. The network is missing for the last 6 days. The powerful waves of the flash floods have swept away network cables in different areas of the province which resulted in the suspension of networks in almost the whole province.

All of the networks i.e. Zong, Jazz, Telenor, and Ufone were suspended, which compounded the problems of the flood-hit people.

Verbal communication among people is totally disconnected. All of the internet and mobile services are not functioning. “I have not contacted my family for the last six days to know about their condition”, Raheem Ullah, a student in higher education told Daily Quetta Voice. However, Balochistan Home Minister, Mir Ziaullah Langove claimed the mobile service was restored on a war footing basis.

The suspension of cellular networks caused a lack of information among the masses and the government. It is difficult for the government to estimate the damages caused by floods in far-flung areas of the province. The masses are facing problems in getting information about the current flood situation to adopt safety precautions. “ “I was informed by a local social worker about the flood water moving towards our village”, Nisar Ahmad a resident of Killa Abdullah stated.

Jazz is missing Ufone is better

All of the networks are missing especially the Jazz network is completely missing. A large number of people installed Ufone sims on their mobile phones because it is the only cellular network that is a little bit functional. Mobile network companies must have an alternative to cope with these situations. They must install generators with their network towers just like these companies have done in other provinces to provide power supply in the case there is no electricity.
