QUETTA: The Balochistan Education Department has released a report detailing the alarming increase in school closures across the province. According to the latest findings, 542 more schools were shut down during the current regime, bringing the total number of inactive schools to 3,694 as of September 2, 2024.

The report reveals a growing educational crisis, with the number of closed schools rising from 3,152 in May to 3,694 across 35 districts. The province is facing a severe shortage of teaching staff, with approximately 16,000 additional teachers required to reactivate the closed institutions.

Pishin district is the most affected, with 254 schools closed, while Dera Bugti faces the fewest closures, with 13 schools inactive. The situation reflects a broader challenge in Balochistan’s education system, where resources are already stretched thin, and the continued shutdowns are putting the future of thousands of students at risk.

The provincial education authorities have yet to announce a comprehensive plan to address the shortage of teachers or reopen the affected schools.
