The New Gwadar International Airport, nearing completion under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is poised to transform Gwadar into a regional and international trade hub. This strategic development promises to unlock unprecedented opportunities for economic growth, connectivity, and development.

One of the most significant aspects of the project is the airport’s secure, uninterrupted power supply. Connected to three separate transmission lines through a 12 MW contract with Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO), the airport is fully equipped to ensure smooth operations. Additionally, a 12 billion-rupee complex is being constructed to house essential facilities such as the Airport Security Force, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) staff accommodations, a community school, and a mosque.

The extension of the East Bay Expressway, connecting Gwadar Port to the new airport, will further streamline the transport of goods and passengers. The 10.5-kilometer road will enhance Gwadar’s integration into regional and global trade networks, positioning the city as a vital player in international commerce.

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) recently confirmed the successful testing of the airport, including a test flight of an AirKing B700. With staff receiving specialized training in China, the airport is prepared to manage operations independently, ensuring world-class standards in design, performance, and safety.

Under the Open Skies policy, the New Gwadar International Airport will be operated through a joint venture involving Pakistan, Oman, and China. This partnership further solidifies Gwadar’s significance in the global trade landscape, as it opens its doors to international airlines, starting with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Khalid Kakar, the airport’s manager, highlighted that the new facility will revolutionize air travel in the region. While the old airport could only handle small aircraft, the new one will accommodate large domestic and international flights, making Gwadar more accessible for both citizens and investors.

More than just an infrastructure project, the New Gwadar International Airport is a key driver of Gwadar’s economic future. By enhancing connectivity and boosting commercial activities, this modern facility is set to position Gwadar as a central player in global trade, ushering in a new era of prosperity for the region.
