Manan Mandokhail:
QUETTA, April 14, 2025 —At least 14 people, including children, fell ill after consuming spoiled and fungus-infected bakery items from a shop located in Killi Gul Muhammad, Airport Road, Quetta. The Balochistan Food Authority (BFA) immediately took notice of the incident and sealed the bakery.
According to the BFA spokesperson, the authority’s special inspection team was dispatched to the site on the instructions of BFA Director General Waqar Khurshid Alam. During the inspection, the team discovered expired and fungus-infected bakery products. The premises were found to be in poor hygienic condition, and food storage practices were deemed highly unsanitary.
In addition, none of the products displayed manufacturing or expiry dates — a clear violation of food safety regulations. Samples of the bakery items have been sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis, and further legal action will be taken based on the report.
Before sealing the bakery, the inspection team visited a private hospital to meet the victims — whose ages ranged from 2 to 40 years. The affected individuals described experiencing severe illness after consuming the contaminated food.
DG BFA Waqar Khurshid Alam emphasized that the authority is committed to ensuring the supply of safe and quality food to the public. “Those selling poison in the name of food and playing with the health of innocent people, including children, will face strict action without any leniency,” he stated.
The BFA continues its crackdown against food outlets violating hygiene and safety standards in Balochistan.
