December 29: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti formally assumed the role of the eighth Chief of the Bugti tribe on Monday, continuing a leadership tradition that stretches back more than two centuries. Historical accounts note that the title was first conferred on his grandfather around 1800, symbolizing the tribe’s strong system of organization and leadership.

The turban-tying ceremony took place in Baikar, located in Dera Bugti district, and was attended by tribal elders, local dignitaries and senior members of various Bugti clans. During the event, Mir Sarfaraz Bugti was ceremonially crowned as Chief of the Bugtis, in line with long-standing tribal customs. Members of the Nawab Bugti family also participated, including Nawabzada Zamran Saleem Akbar Bugti.

Prominent clan leaders present at the ceremony included Ghulam Nabi Shambani Bugti (Shambani clan), Jalal Kalpar Bugti (Kalpar clan), Muhammad Bakhsh Mondrani Bugti (Mondrani clan), Mir Gul Perozani Bugti (Perozani clan), Bahar Khan Nothani Bugti (Nothani clan) and Manzoor Domb Bugti (Domb clan).

Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti was born on June 1, 1980, in Baikar. He received his early education locally and later completed his graduation from Lawrence College, Murree. Entering politics, he was elected to the Balochistan Assembly in 2013, serving as provincial home minister, minister for tribal affairs, minister for prisons and chairman of the PDMA.

From 2018 to 2023, he served as a member of the Senate of Pakistan and sat on several key committees. Between August and December 2023, he was part of the federal caretaker cabinet, holding portfolios including interior, narcotics control, overseas Pakistanis, human resource development and human rights. He has been serving as Chief Minister of Balochistan since March 2024.

Mir Sarfaraz Bugti is widely regarded as a leader who bridges tradition and governance, playing a significant role in guiding the Bugti tribes and contributing to Balochistan’s political landscape.
