News Desk: Islamabad court has issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi in a case linked to alleged misleading statements about state institutions.
Senior Civil Judge Abbas Shah ordered the warrants after Afridi failed to appear during the scheduled hearing. The case was registered by the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, the main law governing cyber offences and electronic communications in Pakistan.
According to the complaint, Afridi’s remarks were viewed as damaging to the credibility of state institutions. The court has directed authorities to arrest him and produce him before the bench, while the hearing has been adjourned until January 17.
The development comes as Afridi leads Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) nationwide mobilisation drive. After visiting Punjab and sending a protest letter to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, he is expected to travel to Karachi on January 9 as part of the campaign.
PTI launched its movement after party founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, along with his wife, received a 17-year prison sentence in the Toshakhana-II case. Afridi has been tasked with rallying supporters ahead of a major show of strength planned for February 8.
