QUETTA: UNICEF, the UN organization for children provided 6000 oral cholera vaccines to the flood-affected people of Lasbela district Balochistan on Thursday. Gerida J.Barukla, the Filed Chief of UNICEF Balochistan reached Lasbela to meet the children and other flood-affected people.
Flash floods unleashed by heavy rainfall have wreaked havoc across Balochistan in general and the Lasbela district in particular. “Oral vaccination plays a key role in the prevention of cholera”, Gerida J. Barukla told the inaugural session of the establishment of a regional cold room in the district.
She said the UNICEF was trying to reach every flood affectee in collaboration with the government of Balochistan health department. The World Health Assembly adopted a resolution about the prevention and control of cholera in 2018.
The major objective behind the resolution was to decrease the death ratio by 90 percent by 2030 through cholera. She stated that the Oral Cholera Vaccine plays an important role in the prevention of the outbreak of cholera and gives an effective road map to tackle the situation in the future.
During her visit, the UNICEF Filed Chief also called on Deputy Commissioner Lasbela, Murad Khan Kasi to discuss cholera. The DC assured provision of all possible support to the UNICEF and health officials to make sure provision of OCV drops to all affected people.
Mr. Kasir stated that routine immunization was necessary to prevent such diseases in the country.
