Polio case reported in Balochistan

QUETTA: Three polio cases were confirmed from various parts of Balochistan on Thursday. The crippling virus was confirmed among three baby-girls, a health official who declined to be named told daily Quetta Voice since he was not authorized to speak to the media.

An eight-month-old girl fell prey to the crippling virus in Balochistan’s Zhob district, a 4 and half-year-old girl was tested positive for the poliovirus in Naseerabad and a 13-month-old girl also contracted the virus in the province’s Jhal Magsi, he said.

With the confirmation of new cases of the virus, polio cases in Balochistan have reached 10 during the current year. The reason behind the fresh polio cases was yet to be ascertained.

UNICEF, the health department government of Balochistan in collaboration with other organizations have been conducting anti-polio campaigns for the last more than three decades. However, the cropping virus is yet to be eradicated from Balochistan province and the country.

Health department statistics show that most of the cases have been reported from Quetta, Pishin, Killabadullah districts of Balochistan. However, currently, cases have been reported from Jaffarabad, Jhal Magsi, and Naseerabad, the districts bordering with Sindh province.

Militants in the past have also frequently targeted the anti-polio volunteers in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan.
