Quetta: The Balochistan Assembly on Thursday passed a joint resolution calling for a ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), citing the party’s alleged involvement in promoting anarchy and targeting state institutions. The resolution, supported by members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), was approved despite a walkout by opposition members.
The resolution condemned PTI’s actions, especially the May 9 incidents, accusing the party of inciting riots and harming the judiciary, media, and economy. It stated that PTI’s agenda aligns with anti-national forces, further criticizing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s protests as a misuse of state resources. The resolution also lauded the Pakistan Army for its sacrifices and pledged the Assembly’s unwavering support for the armed forces.
PML-N lawmaker Saleem Khosa defended the resolution, arguing that PTI’s actions jeopardize democracy and national security. He emphasized that political power should stem from public mandate, not disruptive tactics. However, JUI-F’s Nawab Aslam Raisani and National Party’s Dr. Malik Baloch opposed the move, advocating for dialogue and criticizing bans on political parties as attacks on democratic structures.
The opposition walkout followed heated debate, with Dr. Malik Baloch condemning the resolution as an assault on constitutional principles. Despite their absence, the resolution was passed, marking a significant development in the province’s political landscape.
