QUETTA: Chief of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi has vowed to support host communities for Afghan refugees in Pakistan in terms of education and health facilities.
Mr. Filippo Grandi arrived Quetta and met with various Afghan refugee families living in Pakistan for last more than three decades. “Major concern of the Afghan refugees in Pakistan is security situation in Afghanistan”, he told reporters at a press conference at the sub-office of UNHCR on Saturday.
He mentioned that the security situation in Afghanistan was yet to be improved completely and the refugees major concern was security in their motherland.
He said Pakistan has been one of the world’s largest host of refugees across the globe and Prime Minister Imran Khan was among the five head of States at the UN last year. “We acknowledge Pakistan’s support”, Mr. Filippo Grandi mentioned.
In response to a question, the UNHCR Chief stated that the arrival of Afghan refugees had created environmental issues besides health, education and etc.
Government of Pakistan and UNHCR will be organizing a seminar on Feb 17, 18 in Islamabad, which will remind the world that Afghan refugees are still living in the country as refugees after decades.
Yet to another question, Mr. Filippo Grandi informed that the number of registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan was 1.4 million.
