QUETTA – Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police Quetta, Aitzaz Ahmed Goraya, has clarified that police have no mandate to check the marriage certificates of citizens.
His remarks came in response to viral social media posts showing police personnel questioning refugees over their marital documents.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Quetta Voice, DIG Goraya said, “It is not the mandate of police to verify marriage certificates of Afghan refugees returning to their homeland.” He emphasized that the decision to repatriate undocumented foreign nationals, including Afghans, lies with the federal government.
“The government has decided to send them back respectfully and with dignity,” he stated.
DIG Goraya further added that police are committed to protecting lives and properties in Quetta and have clear instructions not to harass or threaten innocent citizens. “Police are here to facilitate all residents of the provincial capital,” he said.
He confirmed that 47 Afghan nationals illegally residing in Quetta have been arrested, in line with the orders of the Pakistan High Court. “We will implement court directives in letter and spirit,” he noted.
The clarification came after DIG Goraya suspended two police officers involved in checking refugees’ marriage certificates and taking their photographs. The suspension was widely appreciated on social media.
He reaffirmed that police remain focused on eliminating terrorism, crime, and other social evils from society.
