Qaseem Shah:
QUETTA – In a major step toward integrating technology into governance, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti chaired a high-level meeting focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and assess the condition of the province’s road network.
The meeting, held at the Department of Communication and Works, included Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan, Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Zahid Saleem, Principal Secretary Babar Khan, Government Spokesperson Shahid Rind, Secretary IT Ayaz Khan Mandokhail, and Secretary Communications Lal Jan Jaffar.
Officials presented a detailed briefing on the proposed AI-based system, explaining how it would allow for real-time digital monitoring of roads across remote areas of the province. The system aims to improve oversight of infrastructure conditions and ensure more efficient maintenance.
Highlighting the region’s challenges, CM Bugti said that maintaining road infrastructure in far-flung areas of Balochistan remains a significant hurdle. “The poor condition of roads causes immense difficulties for the people,” he noted.
The chief minister stressed the importance of shifting from traditional monitoring methods to smart and digital solutions. “Using advanced technology will not only improve transparency in development projects but also help prevent the misuse of public funds,” he said.
He further emphasized that every development project must reflect on-ground realities and meet quality standards. “We will not compromise on the durability, timelines, or quality of roads,” CM Bugti added.
The AI-powered monitoring system is currently in the consultation phase. A final decision on its implementation will be made following further technical review and stakeholder input.
