CHAMAN: The Pakistan–Afghanistan border crossing at Chaman remained shut on Saturday after a night-long exchange of gunfire between Pakistani and Afghan forces, causing severe disruption for travellers, traders, and families stuck on both sides of the frontier.
Security officials confirmed that Pakistan’s Frontier Corps and other law-enforcement agencies increased deployments at critical checkpoints following the intense firing late Friday. Afghanistan’s security forces also reinforced their positions in Spin Boldak, triggering fears among residents of a possible extended standoff.
Travellers, Families Stranded as Temperatures Fall
Hundreds of people — including Afghan nationals trying to return home — were left waiting for hours at the Friendship Gate, many without shelter or essential facilities amid dropping winter temperatures.
“The gate never opened this morning. Families with small children are in real trouble,” said a traveller waiting at the border terminal.
Civilians Injured in Overnight Firing
Local sources said a detailed security report is being compiled for the Chairman of the Border Management and Master Plan Committee. Officials are reviewing whether additional security measures are required to prevent further escalation.
The cross-border firing, which reportedly continued for several hours, left at least three civilians wounded on the Pakistani side, including a woman. Emergency medical teams in Chaman are providing treatment and remain on standby as the situation stays tense.
