Web Desk: The Balochistan High Court (BHC) on Friday suspended the implementation of an FIR registered against National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, providing temporary relief to the veteran politician while admitting his constitutional petition for regular hearing.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Muhammad Kamran Mullahkhail heard the petition challenging the FIR lodged at Gulistan Police Station in Qila Abdullah district. Following preliminary arguments, the court ordered that no action be taken under the FIR until further proceedings and issued notices to the provincial government and other respondents.
Achakzai, who also serves as chairman of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), was represented by a team of senior lawyers, including Muhammad Riaz Ahmed, Senator Kamran Murtaza, Habibullah Nasar, Ayaz Mandokhail and Rahib Buledi.
The FIR was registered over a speech allegedly delivered by Achakzai during a public gathering. Authorities claim the speech included remarks against a state institution and criticism of the current government. Several other political leaders have also been named in the case.
According to the allegations, the speech contained statements deemed provocative and capable of inciting public sentiment. However, Achakzai’s petition challenges the legality of the FIR and seeks judicial protection against the criminal proceedings.
With the latest BHC order, all proceedings linked to the FIR will remain suspended until the court hears the matter again. The provincial government and other respondents have been directed to submit their replies before the next hearing.
The case is being closely watched due to its political significance and its implications for freedom of expression and political activity in Balochistan.
