By Our Correspondent: A policy dialogue in Quetta has called for stronger legislation, enhanced parliamentary oversight and improved coordination among government institutions to counter terrorism and prevent violent extremism in Balochistan.
The dialogue was organized by the Balochistan Home Department in collaboration with the British High Commission in Islamabad, bringing together parliamentarians, government officials and other stakeholders to discuss counterterrorism measures and strategies to prevent violent extremism.
Provincial Education Minister Raheela Hameed Khan Durrani attended the event as the chief guest, while members of the Balochistan Assembly, including Engineer Zamarak Khan Achakzai and Shahida Rauf, also participated.
Discussions focused on strengthening the legal framework for counterterrorism and preventing violent extremism, enhancing the role of parliamentarians in policymaking, and improving coordination and cooperation among relevant institutions.
Speaking at the event, Raheela Hameed Khan Durrani said young people could play a key role in the development of the country and society. She stressed the importance of providing youth with opportunities for education, skills development and constructive activities.
The provincial minister said preventing violent extremism required more than legislation, emphasizing the promotion of tolerance, positive thinking and responsible social attitudes alongside legal and institutional measures.
Special Secretary Home Salam Khan Achakzai stressed the need for effective coordination and timely information sharing among institutions involved in counterterrorism efforts.
He said stronger legislation, institutional cooperation and a coordinated strategy could improve the effectiveness of counterterrorism measures in Balochistan.
Salam Khan Achakzai also emphasized consultation among parliamentarians, government departments and other stakeholders during the policymaking process, saying coordinated efforts were essential for developing practical measures to promote peace and stability in the province.
Other speakers, including Tahira Baloch, Manzoor Ahmed Baloch, Sana Durrani, Sitara Baloch, Rafi Baloch and Salam Jogezai, also addressed the policy dialogue.
