A plague of locusts has severely damaged standing crops in almost all parts of Balochistan. The locusts’ invasions in 31 out of 33 districts of Balochistan have damaged crops standing on 3,500 hectares of land, Arif Shah, the Director Plant Protection, Agriculture Department Balochistan revealed.

However, the farmers and growers put the number much higher than what is being quoted by the officials in this regard. “Locusts invasions have damaged crops on thousands of hectares of land in Balochistan”, Abdul Rehman Bazai, the central office bearer of growers action committee Balochistan claimed.

The locusts continue to damage onion, tomatoes, wheat, and other crops in various districts of Balochistan, Mr. Shah informed. He said this is an indigenous generation of locusts attacking crops in the province. “We are bracing for locusts attacks in fast-approaching June”, he warned.

Locusts from Iran and other countries are feared to enter into Balochistan. Currently, locusts have been attacking crops in Killa Saifullah, Kharan, Kech, Chaghi, Kalat, Mastung, Pishin, Killa Abdullah and other parts of the province, Mr. Shah informed.
