QUETTA: Police baton-charged protesting teachers and employees of Balochistan University on Wednesday afternoon. Professors, lecturers and employees of the University of Balochistan were protesting against the recently adopted universities model act 2022 and demanding an increase in their allowances.

“Police baton-charged and used force against our colleagues”, Professor Kaleemullah Bareech, one of the leaders of the university academic staff association said. The protesters were also chanting full-throated slogans against the Vice-Chancellor Dr. Shafiqu ur Rehman and the Balochistan government.

Baton-wielding policemen pushed back the protesters and asked them not to take law into their hands. Strict security measures were adopted by the administration on the eve of agitation of teachers and employees.

“This government has bypassed university faculty members and employees in adopting laws”, Nazeer Ahmed Lehri, the President of university employees lamented. Mr. Lehri said that the government had repeatedly assured an increase in the allowances of employees but it failed to do so.

“Our struggle will continue till acceptance of our demands”, Professor Fareed Khan Achakzai said. He said the university administration and Balochistan government have surpassed the military dictators in introducing new laws.

The protesters were demanding 44 percent house requisition, and 25 disparity allowance during the protest. There was no immediate response from the university administration about the protest of university employees. Faculty members and employees of Balochistan University have been protesting for the last few months in support of their demands.

Several rounds of talks with members of the provincial assembly and university administration have been held. However, so far no progress has been made in this regard.
