Syed Ali Shah, Manan Mandokhail:
Rescue workers found seven more dead bodies in Loralai and Quetta on Saturday as the death toll rises to 63 in rains and floods-related incidents across Balochistan. “Rescue workers found five dead bodies in Loralai and two in Quetta”, a senior official of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said.
Most of the casualties were reported in Quetta, Bolan, Loralai, Pishin, and Killa Abdullah in the aftermath of heavy monsoon rainfall in the province. Floods and rain-related incidents have also left more than 50 people injured in Balochistan.
People constructed houses on natural waterways
Balochistan Home Minister, Mir Ziaullah Langove said people had constructed their homes on natural waterways in Quetta. Most of the victims belonged to the areas where mud-walled houses were constructed on waterways, he said.
In view of monsoon prediction, the Balochistan government has decided to abolish all encroachments on natural waterways in the provincial capital. Deputy Commissioner Quetta, Mir Shahak Baloch would lead the anti-encroachment committee to make the campaign a success. Officials from the concerned departments have also been included as members of the committee.
Flash floods swept away dams across Balochistan
Flash floods unleashed by torrential rains have also swept away delay and check dams and bridges in different parts of the province. This prompted the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) Provincial President, Qahar Wadan to file a constitutional petition in the Balochistan High Court (BHC).
Chief Justice BHC, Mr. Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan admitted the petition for hearing and directed the concerned authorities to appear before the court on July 13 this month. In his petition, Mr. Qahar Wadan has feared the breaching of the Kadani dam near the Afghan border.
He said the local administration and concerned departments were not taking the required steps to avoid human and prosperity losses in the area. Mr. Wadan had demanded of the court to take notice of the situation.
