After facing multiple delays and intense debate, the Senate has successfully passed the Constitution (26th Amendment) Act, 2024. Members voted in favor of 22 key clauses within the legislation, which is widely known as the Constitutional Package. Among the significant amendments is the extension of the chief justice’s tenure.
A special parliamentary committee, formed last month with representation from all political parties, including the PTI, had been reviewing the proposals.
Earlier today, the federal cabinet, in agreement with coalition partners, approved the bill. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar then presented the bill in the Senate, leading to its successful passage.
