Quetta: Balochistan faces a critical healthcare crisis, with over 3,500 doctor positions vacant and 489 health units non-functional, according to a briefing presented during a meeting of the Standing Committee on Health. Chaired by Dr. Nawaz Kibzai, the session highlighted alarming shortages in staffing and infrastructure that directly affect patient care.

Out of 7,525 approved posts for doctors and general cadre staff, only 3,995 are filled, leaving thousands of positions unoccupied. Similarly, only 762 out of 1,251 primary health centers are operational, with 38 completed units lacking funds and 254 still under construction.

Key Issues Discussed

  • Healthcare Staff Shortages: Dr. Kibzai called for immediate recruitment of medical officers and nurses on a permanent basis to address the gaps.
  • Specialist Positions: Out of 600 approved posts for specialists, only 180 are filled, leaving the province critically underserved.
  • NGO Funding Concerns: The chairman questioned disproportionate funding for NGOs managing a 40-bed section at Civil Hospital.

Government Response

Provincial Health Minister Bakht Mohammad Kakar assured the committee of steps to expedite recruitment and improve hospital functionality through a semi-autonomous system.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the Spain Road Trauma Center and called for activating specialized departments like neuro and cardio care to address urgent healthcare needs.
