QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly received a comprehensive briefing on the government’s efforts to improve the province’s healthcare system. Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti and various lawmakers attended the session, where key challenges and reforms were discussed.
Health Minister Bakht Mohammad Kakkar and Health Secretary Mujibur Rahman Panizai presented a detailed report, revealing that Balochistan’s health budget exceeds Rs.87 billion, but the bulk of the funds are directed toward salaries rather than developmental projects.
The briefing disclosed that the provincial government has hired 10,000 employees in a short period to enhance healthcare services. However, a significant shortage of doctors and nurses persists, with only 3,800 doctors available, while over 10,000 more are required to meet the population’s healthcare needs. Additionally, Civil Hospital Quetta operates with just 200 nurses, whereas at least 1,000 are urgently needed to manage emergency units, wards, and operation theaters efficiently.
“For the first time in Balochistan’s history, an information cell has been established to streamline healthcare operations,” Panizai stated.
Emphasizing the government’s priorities, Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti said, “Health and education remain our top focus. We are committed to implementing transformative reforms in both sectors.”
Lawmakers from both government and opposition benches raised concerns and urged swift action to address these pressing healthcare challenges.
