Syed Ali Shah:

QUETTA: The Balochistan High Court (BHC) on Tuesday allowed the family of detained rights activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch to visit her in prison, following protests and a shutter-down strike in various parts of Balochistan against the arrest of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders.

A two-member BHC bench, comprising Justices Rozi Khan Barrech and Shaukat Ali Rakhshani, heard a petition filed by Dr. Mahrang’s sister, Nadia Baloch, challenging her detention. The court accepted the petition, issued notices to the authorities, and granted them a week to provide details of the cases against her.

Dr. Mahrang was detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, which her legal counsel argued violated constitutional rights. The court found the case worthy of review and approved a request for her family and lawyer to meet her at District Jail Hudda Quetta.

The decision comes after the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) and BYC organized demonstrations and strikes across the province. BNP-M has also announced a long march from Wadh to Quetta to protest the arrests of BYC leaders. Tensions remain high in various parts of Balochistan as protests continue.
