A prominent tribal leader Mir Atta-ur-Rehman Mengal was shot dead in a targeted attack in the Khuzdar district on Sunday.

His son, Mir Mati-ur-Rehman Mengal, sustained serious injuries during the ambush.

According to initial reports, the attack took place in the Aranji Awak area. Armed assailants opened fire on the vehicle of the victims, leaving one dead and another critically injured before fleeing the scene.

The deceased, Mir Atta-ur-Rehman Mengal, was the eldest son of former Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Mohammad Naseer Mengal and the elder brother of Mir Shafiq-ur-Rehman Mengal, head of the Jhalawan Awami Panel. The Mengal family is considered one of the most influential tribal families in the area.

Investigation Underway

Security forces reached the scene shortly after the incident and launched a search operation in the area. The injured son was shifted to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition, according to medical sources.

Police officials have not yet confirmed the motive behind the attack, but the incident has raised fresh concerns over tribal rivalries, targeted killings, and security conditions in southern Balochistan.

Public Reaction and Tensions

The killing has sparked outrage and fear among local communities. Political observers note that this could deepen tribal tensions in the volatile region if not addressed swiftly and with transparency.
