Quetta: A seminar titled “Countering Violent Extremism and the Role of Digital Media” was held at the Quetta Press Club, bringing together senior officials, journalists and digital media experts to discuss how online platforms can be used to curb harmful narratives and promote responsible engagement.
Imran Shahid Ranjha, Director Press Information Department (PID) Islamabad, led the discussion by stressing that violent extremism is evolving rapidly in the digital age. He said that online platforms, if misused, can amplify hate, misinformation and anti-state propaganda, but with coordinated efforts they can also become powerful tools for peacebuilding. He urged youth, journalists and civil society to support positive digital initiatives and counter harmful behaviours online.
Speaking at the seminar, Editor-in-Chief, Quetta Voice, Syed Ali Shah highlighted the crucial responsibility of every citizen to verify information before posting or sharing it. He said fake news fuels confusion and instability, and added that responsible digital habits are essential to break the cycle of misinformation. He called for stronger awareness campaigns to educate the public on safe and lawful use of social media.
Asad Khan Mandokhail, Director PID Quetta, underscored the need to strengthen digital literacy, especially among young users who are most targeted by extremist content. He said coordinated public messaging, media training and community engagement can significantly reduce the influence of malicious online narratives.
Senior journalist Manzoor Baloch also addressed the participants, warning that extremist groups exploit social platforms to spread misleading content. He said journalists and media workers play a frontline role in ensuring factual reporting and promoting a healthy information environment.
Participants agreed that combating violent extremism requires a collective effort—where state institutions, media organisations, educational bodies and the public all work together to build a safer and more informed digital society.
