Syed Muhammad Qaseem: Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences (BUMHS), the first and only public-sector medical university in Balochistan, has marked a major academic achievement with the official launch of the Bolan Journal of Medical and Allied Health Sciences. The journal is the first peer-focused medical research publication in the province and aims to promote quality research and strengthen evidence-based healthcare practices.

The launch ceremony was held in Quetta, with Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Shabbir Ahmed Lehri as the chief guest. Addressing the event, Dr Lehri said that research and innovation remain central to BUMHS’s academic vision, as strong research foundations are essential for improving healthcare delivery. He highlighted that the university has shown notable improvement in Higher Education Commission (HEC) rankings within a short period and continues to progress in academic, research, and administrative fields.

The event was formally opened by Professor Dr Rauf Shah. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Aslam Buzdar, Editor of the Bolan Journal of Medical and Allied Health Sciences, said the journal would play a key role in fostering a research-oriented culture in Balochistan. He added that it would provide guidance to young researchers and offer a reliable platform for publishing high-quality scientific studies.

Dr Buzdar also noted that between 2023 and 2025, BUMHS successfully conducted MDCAT examinations across Balochistan in a transparent and efficient manner. He said the university also conducted the Nursing College Admission Test (NCAT) for 13 government nursing colleges for the first time, representing a major step towards a merit-based and transparent admission system.

To further strengthen research activities, BUMHS has established ethical review boards, launched academic journals, and organized national and international medical conferences to enhance scholarly collaboration. Administratively, significant developments include the relocation of the city campus, establishment of a modern university library, and the commencement of construction work at the main campus.

The university has also introduced new academic programs, conducted examinations for over 5,300 students, arranged professional training for faculty and staff, launched student awareness initiatives, and implemented school health programs in collaboration with UNICEF.

The launch of the Bolan Journal of Medical and Allied Health Sciences is being seen as a landmark step toward advancing medical research, improving academic standards, and promoting a modern, evidence-based healthcare system in Balochistan.
