Islamabad: At least 15 people were killed and more than 80 others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through an imambargah in the Tarlai area on the outskirts of the federal capital during Friday prayers, triggering a major emergency response and nationwide condemnation.

Police and rescue officials said the blast occurred near the entrance of the worship site as large numbers of devotees gathered, causing panic and heavy casualties. Security personnel quickly sealed off the area, while ambulances transported the wounded to nearby hospitals including Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Polyclinic, and CDA Hospital, where emergency protocols were enforced.

Authorities are investigating the nature of the explosion, with initial reports suggesting a possible suicide bombing. Law enforcement agencies and bomb disposal teams have begun forensic analysis, while roads leading to the locality were temporarily closed to facilitate rescue and security operations.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate act of violence and directing authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for those injured. He emphasised the government’s commitment to pursuing those responsible and preventing further attacks.

Officials said no group has immediately claimed responsibility, though militant organisations that have previously targeted religious congregations remain under scrutiny. Analysts note that extremist groups including factions linked to the Pakistani Taliban or Islamic State have historically carried out similar attacks on Shiite communities.

The incident comes amid ongoing security challenges in the country, following recent militant violence in other regions. The attack has once again raised concerns about public safety, counter-terrorism preparedness, and the protection of religious gatherings.

Investigations are continuing, and authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant as further details emerge.

This is a developing situation, and details may change as authorities provide further updates.
