News Desk:Â The Balochistan government has rolled out a wide-ranging relief package featuring free public transport for one month, Rs15,000 support for small farmers, and 15-day waiver on vehicle transfer fees, as fuel prices and regional uncertainty continue to impact the economy.
Announcing the measures, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti said the Green and Pink bus services in Quetta and other areas will remain completely free for a month to provide immediate relief to commuters. He added that farmers owning up to 12.5 acres will receive financial assistance through Kisan Cards to cover diesel and threshing expenses during the wheat season.
The government has also introduced subsidies for goods transporters, while efforts are underway to secure federal support for public transport. With nearly 80,000 registered transport vehicles in the province, these steps aim to stabilize fares and reduce pressure on citizens.
Under austerity measures, the province has saved over Rs1.4 billion in a single month, while cumulative savings in the last fiscal year reached Rs14 billion. The cabinet has also decided to forgo two months’ salaries to support the national economy.
To control inflation, authorities have intensified monitoring of markets, warning of strict action against hoarding and profiteering. Proposals are being reviewed to close markets at 8 PM and restaurants and marriage halls at 10 PM as part of energy-saving efforts.
Mir Sarfraz Bugti emphasized that no lockdown is being imposed, but citizens are urged to conserve energy. He noted that government offices are operating with 50% staff, unnecessary expenses have been curtailed, and surplus official vehicles are being auctioned and gradually replaced with electric vehicles.
Referring to regional tensions involving Iran, the chief minister said the situation is contributing to rising inflation and could pose further economic challenges if prolonged.
