QUETTA: Two close associates of Basir Achakzai, a former commander of Afghanistan’s previous democratic government, were killed when unidentified armed men opened fire near Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Quetta, police said.

According to the police statement, the incident took place in the vicinity of Sheikh Zayed Hospital, where the two men came under attack by unidentified assailants.

Police said both victims sustained critical gunshot wounds and died in the incident. Their bodies were shifted for legal and medico-legal procedures.

The motive behind the shooting was not immediately known. Police and other law-enforcement agencies reached the area following the incident and launched an investigation.

Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and collecting evidence to determine the identities and whereabouts of the attackers.

The incident has raised concerns over the security situation in Quetta, where sporadic incidents of violence and targeted attacks have been reported in recent months.

Further details, including the identities of the deceased and any arrests, were not immediately available.
