Lahore: Pakistan is set to get a new medical college as the Punjab government has approved a project worth Rs4.4 billion for the establishment of Layyah Medical College, marking a major development for medical education in the country.

According to an official notification issued by the Punjab government’s Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department on October 17, 2026, administrative approval was granted following a decision at the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) meeting held on September 28, 2026. The project has a total approved cost of Rs4,406.617 million, including Rs3,449.838 million for capital expenditure and Rs956.779 million for revenue expenditure. The project timeline extends until June 30, 2028.
The establishment of Layyah Medical College is expected to strengthen medical education infrastructure in Pakistan, particularly in southern Punjab, while creating potential opportunities for students aspiring to pursue medical careers.
The project is particularly encouraging for students from Layyah and neighbouring districts, who may benefit from improved access to medical education once the institution becomes operational.
However, the notification confirms administrative approval for the project and does not specify an admissions schedule, the number of MBBS seats, the first academic session or regulatory recognition.
Students are advised to follow official announcements from the Punjab government and relevant medical education authorities for updates regarding admissions and the college’s operational status.
