Baloch leader Sardar Attaullah Mengal passes away

Veteran Baloch leader, Sardar Attaullah Mengal breathed his last on Thursday evening in a private hospital in Karachi. Sardar Mengal was suffering from a protracted illness. Balochistan National Party (Mengal) confirmed the demise of Sardar Mengal.

Sanaullah Baloch, the BNP legislator took to social media network Twitter and announced the demise of Sardar Mengal.

Sardar Mengal remained the Chief Minister of Balochistan from May 1st, 1972 to February 1973. He was the first elected Chief Minister of Balochistan. His government was overthrown by the then Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The Bhutto government also imprisoned Sardar Mengal under the famous Hyderabad conspiracy case along with veteran Pashtoon and Baloch leaders including late Khan Abdul Wali Khan, late Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri, and others.

Sardar Mengal went into self-exile in London

Sardar Mengal then went to self-exile after Bhutto’s government was overthrown by General Zia ul Haq and spent years in London. In the late 1990s, he returned to Pakistan and formed a BNP that emerged as one of the largest parliamentary groups during general elections.

Sardar Mengal also headed the Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement (PONM). His son Sardar Akhtar Mengal remained Chief Minister of Balochistan from 1997 to 1998.

He belonged to Wadh Tehsil of Khuzdar district 

Sardar Mengal belonged to Wadh Tehsil of the Khuzdar district. He was considered to be one of the vocal voices for Baloch rights in Pakistan. He would be laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard Wadh. The BNP has announced the burial of veteran Baloch leader at 3 pm at Wadh area of Khuzdar district on Friday (tomorrow).

Jam Kamal expresses condolence

Chief Minister Balochistan, Jam Kamal Khan has expressed grief and sorrows over the demise of elderly Baloch leader, Sardar Attaullah Mengal. In a condolence statement, the CM said that Sardar Mengal’s political and social struggle would always be remembered.
BNP also announced mourning to mourn the death of Saradar Mengal.
