QUETTA: Balochistan Assembly has demanded an immediate delay in local bodies’ elections in the province. In a recommendation letter drafted by the Balochistan Assembly Secretariat, the house has demanded that Chief Minister Mir Quddus Bizenjo and other concerned quarters take up the issue with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Session of BA resumed here with deputy speaker Sardar Babar Musakhail in the chair. Lawmakers from treasury and opposition benches expressed apprehensions and reservations about the LB’s elections in the province. The members noted that the provincial government had not made necessary arrangements with regard to LBs elections.
The house mentioned that LBs elections were already delayed in Quetta, Lasbella, Musakhail, Zhob, and other parts of Balochistan. Therefore, the election commission should review its decision and postpone the LB’s elections for an indefinite period.
GoB announces to hold LBs polls on May 29th
ECP has announced to hold elections in Balochistan on May 29th. The provincial government has also demanded of the ECP to delay the elections because of financial and administrative issues. However, the ECP had turned down the request of the Balochistan government in this regard.
Hitherto, serious flaws and irregularities in the information of wards and delimitations have put a question mark on the credibility of the elections. Political parties and people belonging to various walks of life have urged the ECP to review the holding of the polls and address the grievances of the masses in this regard.
Members of BA mentioned that the ECP should review its decision and make sure transparency in terms of the election of councilors across the province.
