ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has greenlit the proposed draft of the 26th constitutional amendment after reaching a consensus with coalition parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed on Sunday.
The constitutional amendment package, which includes a provision to extend the chief justice’s term, has been the focus of discussions within a special parliamentary committee. This committee, with representatives from all political parties, including the PTI, has reviewed several proposals.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the cabinet meeting held in Islamabad, where the draft was approved. The ruling coalition is now set to present the proposed judicial reforms in both the National Assembly and Senate today.
In a statement, the PMO emphasized that the decision aligns with the government’s commitment to national development and public welfare.
Prime Minister Sharif highlighted this achievement, stating, “Following the stabilization of the economy, this is a significant step toward ensuring constitutional stability and the rule of law in Pakistan.”
The move marks a crucial milestone in the government’s broader efforts to promote constitutional reforms.
