Quetta (NNI): Balochistan has recorded 41.9% below-normal rainfall over the past three months, significantly increasing drought risks in Quetta and six other districts.
According to a report issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the province received only 8.6 mm of rainfall during September, October, and November, compared to the normal average of 14.8 mm. The report further states that temperatures across the province also remained 0.9°C above normal.
The PMD’s drought advisory (pre-alert) highlights that from May to November 2025, western and southwestern parts of Balochistan experienced a further decline in rainfall, along with an increase in the number of continuous dry days—factors that are likely to intensify drought conditions.
Forecasts indicate that from December 2025 to February 2026, rainfall in the affected regions will remain below normal, while temperatures are expected to stay above normal. As a result, drought conditions may worsen in Quetta, Chagai, Gwadar, Kech, Kharan, Mastung, Nushki, Pishin, Panjgur, Qilla Abdullah, and Washuk.
However, the Meteorological Department noted that a rain-bearing system may affect parts of Balochistan later this month, potentially providing partial relief and helping reduce the severity of drought conditions.
Authorities have emphasized the need for advance preparedness and recommended several measures, including:
- ensuring early supply of fodder and water tanks,
- deploying mobile health and veterinary teams,
- activating early-warning systems through SMS and mosques,
- coordinating with NGOs for subsidies for small farmers, and
- promoting water-storage structures and efficient irrigation technologies in the affected union councils.
