News Desk: A senior United Nations delegation is scheduled to visit Quetta this week for the formal transfer of solar-powered public infrastructure worth approximately PKR 1 billion to the Government of Balochistan, highlighting a major step toward clean and sustainable energy in the province.
The delegation includes United Nations Resident Coordinator Mohamed Yahya, UNHCR Representative in Pakistan Philippa Candler, and International Organization for Migration Chief of Mission Mio Sato. During the visit, the UN officials will hold meetings with provincial authorities and review ongoing development initiatives supported by the United Nations in Balochistan.
As part of the visit, a handover ceremony will be held to mark the completion of a large-scale renewable energy program implemented during 2024–2025 with international donor support. The initiative, valued at nearly USD 3.5 million, has enabled the solarization of 48 public facilities across the province.
The solar-powered sites include schools, universities, hospitals, and technical training institutions, particularly in areas affected by frequent power shortages and high energy costs. The project aims to ensure uninterrupted, affordable, and environmentally friendly electricity for essential public services, with a special focus on districts hosting refugee communities.
The United Nations also reiterated its appreciation for Pakistan’s decades-long role in hosting Afghan refugees and emphasized the need for continued protection, compassion, and shared responsibility for refugees and host communities alike.
The initiative is expected to reduce operational costs, improve service delivery, and contribute to long-term energy sustainability in Balochistan, supporting both local communities and public institutions.
