Islamabad: In a significant relief measure for consumers, the federal government on Friday announced a substantial reduction of Rs22 per litre in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), offering much-needed respite amid rising inflationary pressures.

The latest price cut comes just a week after authorities reduced fuel rates by Rs6 to Rs7 per litre, reflecting continued adjustments linked to fluctuations in global oil markets.

Following the new revision, petrol is expected to be priced at approximately Rs381 per litre, while high-speed diesel will now cost around Rs380 per litre. Before the latest reduction, petrol was being sold at Rs403.78 per litre, whereas diesel stood at Rs402.78 per litre.

The announcement was made through an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, which said the decision was aimed at transferring economic relief directly to the public whenever financial room became available.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that easing the burden on citizens remains a key focus of his administration. According to the statement, the government had pledged to provide relief measures to the public and has now acted on that commitment through another major reduction in fuel prices.

Officials also highlighted that fuel prices had already been lowered in the previous week and noted that the government continues to extend subsidies for public transport, freight services, as well as commuters who rely on motorcycles and rickshaws for daily travel.

Petrol prices hold particular importance for middle- and lower-income households, as the fuel is widely used in private vehicles, motorcycles, and rickshaws. Meanwhile, high-speed diesel plays a critical role in heavy transport, industrial operations, and power generation through large-scale generators.

Pakistan has been revising petroleum prices on a weekly basis every Friday night, a policy adopted in response to volatility in international oil markets following geopolitical tensions, including the now-paused conflict involving Iran.
