By Our Correspondent: Balochistan Police have deployed nearly 32,000 security personnel across the province to ensure peaceful observance of Youm-e-Ashura, with 8,000 officers assigned to Quetta, where the largest Muharram procession is being held, Inspector General (IG) of Police Muhammad Tahir said on Friday.

Addressing a media briefing in Quetta, the IG said this year’s Ashura security plan has been significantly strengthened compared to previous years to counter security threats and safeguard mourners.

He said 68 Muharram processions across Balochistan have been classified into different security categories based on their sensitivity. On Friday, 27 processions were held across the province, while the central Ashura procession in Quetta remains the largest and most heavily guarded.

According to the IG Police, more than 3,000 security personnel have been deployed for the Quetta procession alone. The security strategy includes rooftop surveillance, bomb disposal squads (BDS), advanced security technology, comprehensive search operations, and strict screening at all entry and exit points.

Muhammad Tahir said law enforcement agencies are maintaining a high state of alert to eliminate any potential security threats. He stressed that enhanced security measures are essential to protect the public and prevent terrorists from exploiting the occasion.

The police chief also appreciated the cooperation of Anjuman Tajiran (traders’ associations), Sunni and Shia communities, volunteers, and citizens, whose collective efforts have helped maintain a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere during Muharram.

He added that while certain security restrictions may cause temporary inconvenience, they are necessary to ensure public safety and the successful conduct of Ashura processions throughout Balochistan.
