Over 300 mud-walled houses have been damaged in an earthquake in Balochistan’s Washuk district in the wee hours of Thursday. The district is located at the Pak-Iran border. Zakir Baloch, a senior administration official said earthquake tremors jolted Washuk and surrounding areas at 3:40 am.
Mr. Baloch said Killi Sajid, a village located in Basima Tehsil of Washuk district was hit hard by the earthquake. Initial reports suggest over 300 mud-walled houses have been damaged as a result of an earthquake that jolted the entire area. “We have dispatched relief goods to 250 families”, Faisal Panezai, the Director Admin provincial disaster management authority told the daily Quetta Voice.
However, there was no report of any human loss since people were sleeping outside of their rooms owing to hot weather. Video footage and images on social media networks show cracks appeared in walls and rooms. “We are trying to assess the damages at this point of time”, Mr. Baloch said. Hundreds of people have been displaced as a result of the earthquake.
The intensity of the earthquake was 5.4 and it was centered 56km North East of Khuzdar. Aftershocks were also experienced. Quetta and almost all parts of Balochistan are prone to natural disasters.
In April 2013, a powerful earthquake had killed dozens and injured over 100 in the Mashkail area near the Pak-Iran border. Recently, low earthquake tremors jolted the Chaman and Zhob areas of Balochistan. However, no loss has been reported.
