Balochistan Assembly condemns killing of a woman journalist

Balochistan Assembly legislators on Friday expressed serious concern over the murder of a woman journalist in Turbat. They demanded the arrest of culprits involved in the murder of Shaheena Shaheen, a woman journalist murdered in Turbat.

“Killers of  Shaheena are still at large”, Shakeela Naveed Dehwar, a female legislator from the opposition Balochistan National Party (Mengal) lamented. She said the journalist was the victim of so-called honor killing. Incidents of violence against women increased in Balochistan recently.

Nasrullah Zarai, another opposition member from Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) strongly condemned the gang-raped of a woman on Motorway. “This incident has caused outrage throughout the country”, he said.

BA adopts resolution

The house also adopted a resolution against violence against women and the protection of the economic, political, and social rights of women in the province. Sanaullah Baloch, the BNP (Mengal) legislator tabled the resolution in the support of women rights in the house. The house unanimously adopted the resolution.

Speaking on the feasibility of the resolution, Mr. Baloch lamented that rulers have ignored women in all fields of life. There is one school for girls at a distance of 45 km in Balochistan as compared to only 2 km in the rest of the country, he revealed. Legislators also strongly condemned the killing of woman journalist, Shaheena Shaheen.

Treasury members support the resolution

Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, the provincial minister from the ruling Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) also backed the resolution and demanded economic, political, and social rights for the women segment of the society.

Mr. Baloch informed that there is only one technical college for women in Balochistan as compared to 131 in Punjab. “Women are being taught only handicrafts rather than technology and software engineering”, he said.

BNP leader pointed out that the provincial government allocated Rs. 110 billion for cement and iron, ignoring the human development in the province. Both members of the treasury and opposition benches adopted the resolution.
