Stipend for girls students in Balochistan to boost female literacy

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has decided to launch a stipend program for girls students to boost the female literacy rate. Noor ul Haq Baloch, the Secretary Finance Balochistan revealed this during an interview with the daily Quetta Voice.
“This program will ensure maximum enrollment of girls students”, he said. Under the proposed program, the Balochistan government will be paying Rs. 500 to every girl in the middle level, Rs. 800 in secondary school and Rs. 1000 at the intermediate level. “This will double girls enrollment in Balochistan”, Mr. Baloch mentioned.
Balochistan lagging behind other provinces in education sector
Balochistan is lagging behind other provinces in terms of key social indicators as compared to other provinces of the country. The education department’s statistics show more than 1 million children most of the girls are currently out of schools in Balochistan.
“We are determined to enroll out of school children in schools of Balochistan”, Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind, the provincial education minister said. Mr. Rind said the present government was making hectic efforts to improve the literacy rate in the province.
Schools paint a bleak picture
In Balochistan, government-run schools paint a bleak picture across the province. Secretary education Balochistan, Sher Khan Bazai revealed that currently, 8,188 schools have no toilet facility. Lack of basic facilities has severely affected students’ education. Especially, girls abandon schools as a result of a lack of basic facilities in government-run schools.
“We are trying to address key issues in government-run schools”, Mr. Bazai said.
Female literacy rate lowest in some parts of Balochistan
According to sources in the education department, the female literacy rate in Balochistan’s Dera Bugti district was only 2 percent, district Sherani 7 percent, and district Killa Abdullah 9 percent. Girls drop out rate is high in Balochistan as compared to boys. This is for the first time that Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan led government has decided to launch this program to boost girls’ enrollment.
