WomenDay: 66 women murdered in 2020 in Balochistan

QUETTA: In Balochistan, 66 women murdered during 2020 in all 118 violent acts against women. Aurat Foundation and South Asia Partnership released this data on the eve of International Women’s Day on Sunday.

33 women and 18 men murdered in the name of ‘honor killings’ across the province. Most of the incidents of ‘honor killings happened in the Naseerabad and Jaffarabad districts of Balochistan.

Speaking at a news conference at Quetta Press Club, Fatima Khan, Allauddin Khilji, Farah Ashraf, Watan Yar Khilji and other activists also informed that 2,297 acts of violence in 25 districts of Pakistan. The Aurat Foundation and other organizations had conducted a survey in 25 districts of the entire country and 4 districts of Balochistan.

Limited data because of COVID19

“Very limited number of incidents reported during the survey”, Fatima Khan mentioned. She said the outbreak of the COVID19 severely affected the survey.

As per the survey report, 57 percent incidents reported from Punjab 27 percent Sindh 8 percent Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, 6 percent Gilgit Biltistan and 2 percent reported from Balochistan.

The women’s rights activists lamented that despite assurances by the government, acts of violence against women across the country are on a constant rise. “We want an end to violence against women”, Fatima Khan demanded.

3 women committed suicide 11 kidnappedĀ 

In 2020, 3 women committed suicide, 12 women subjected to violence, 11 kidnapped, the activists informed. In most of the cases, the accused managed to flee unharmed from spots. The human rights activists termed impunity as one of the underlying reasons behind increasing acts of violence in Balochistan. “Perpetrators of such incidents should be brought to justice to end this practice”, Ishaq Nasar advocate, a well-known human rights activist said.

The rights activists demanded strict implementation of the law against the elements involved in violence against women in the province.
