9 districts in Balochistan declared calamity-hit areas

QUETTA: Balochistan government on Friday declared nine districts as calamity-hit areas after flash floods unleashed by heavy rainfall. Torrential rains played havoc in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan during the last two weeks.

The districts include Sohbat Pur, Pishin, Gwadar, Awaran, Washuk, Barkhan, Pangur, Lasbella, and Killa Saifullah. According to a notification issued by the Relief Commissioner/ Director-General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the government has assessed the situation and declared the districts as calamity-hit areas.

Rains claim 65 lives in Balochistan

Torrential rains have claimed 65 lives in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan. Most of the victims were women, children, and aged people. The provincial government has already declared Quetta a calamity-hit district.

Torrential rains have swept away small bridges, roads and dams across the province. The Balochistan government has also ordered an inquiry into the breaching of dams. Chief Secretary Balochistan, Abdul Aziz Uqaili has directed the concerned departments to step up the efforts to assess the damages and investigate the breaching of dams throughout the province.

Balochistan government has also declared an emergency to cope with the situation developed in the aftermath of heavy rainfall. An emergency has also been declared in all government-run hospitals to make sure timely medical treatment for all injured.
