The recent altercation between Haq Du Tehreek leader Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman and PPP leader Ali Madad Jatak, captured in a viral video, has cast a spotlight on the growing intolerance among the lawmakers. The incident, which occurred during a session of the Balochistan Assembly presided over by Speaker Captain (R) Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, underscores the urgent need for greater decorum, patience, and adherence to parliamentary norms among our lawmakers.

Balochistan’s rich cultural heritage is steeped in traditions of dialogue, respect, and a commitment to the collective good. The assembly, as a representative institution, is a place where differences should be resolved through reasoned debate, not through heated confrontations. The conduct of lawmakers within this august house should reflect the values and dignity of the people they represent.

The Speaker’s repeated calls for patience and avoidance of “street words” highlight a critical expectation: parliamentarians must maintain a level of discourse that befits their roles as public servants. When leaders engage in behavior that undermines the decorum of the assembly, it not only disrupts proceedings but also erodes public trust in the democratic process.

The viral nature of the recent confrontation serves as a stark reminder of the public’s scrutiny. As elected representatives, parliamentarians carry the responsibility of setting a positive example. They must demonstrate that differences of opinion can be expressed civilly, without descending into personal attacks or disrespect.

Moving forward, it is imperative that all members of the Balochistan Assembly commit to upholding the principles of parliamentary discipline and decorum. This commitment includes exercising patience, showing respect for opposing views, and prioritizing the province’s welfare over partisan disputes. Such discipline is not merely a procedural necessity but a reflection of the enduring values of Balochistan—a province that has always prided itself on resilience, respect, and a strong sense of community.

The assembly must strive to be a beacon of these values, fostering an environment where constructive dialogue prevails. In doing so, lawmakers can better address the pressing issues facing Balochistan and ensure that the province’s diverse voices are heard in a manner that is both dignified and effective.
