KARACHI, QUETTA: In a video link meeting, Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari convened with the irrigation departments of Sindh and Balochistan to discuss critical water distribution issues and the recent flood damages caused by heavy rains in the provinces.
Ministers Brief Chairman on Departmental Performance
Balochistan Irrigation Minister Sadiq Umrani and Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro briefed Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on their respective departments’ performance. The ministers provided detailed reports on the challenges faced during the recent monsoon rains, including the damages to infrastructure, particularly canal embankments.
United Stand on Water Distribution Formula
During the meeting, both provinces agreed to present a united front at the platform of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) regarding the water distribution formula. This collaboration aims to address long-standing concerns over water allocation between the provinces, ensuring a fair and equitable distribution.
Inquiry into Flood-Related Damages
Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also inquired about the extent of flood-related damages in Sindh and Balochistan, particularly focusing on the conditions of roads and embankments. The ministers were tasked with providing a comprehensive assessment of the damages and the remedial measures being undertaken to prevent further losses.
Call for Detailed Damage Reports
In a follow-up, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari directed the ministers to submit detailed reports on the damages to canal embankments caused by the recent rains. These reports are expected to include an analysis of the affected areas and recommendations for strengthening infrastructure to mitigate future risks.
The meeting underscored the urgency of addressing these issues ahead of the next monsoon season to safeguard the livelihoods of the communities dependent on these water resources.
