Syed Ali Shah:

Quetta, March 5, 2025: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has termed the distribution of home solar systems as a significant milestone for the province, emphasizing the government’s commitment to meeting energy needs through alternative solutions. Speaking at a ceremony in Quetta on Wednesday, he expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for providing these solar systems under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which will help alleviate public hardships.

CM Bugti revealed that these solar systems had been lying in warehouses for months, but the current government ensured their transparent distribution and low-cost installation. Acknowledging the efforts of the Parliamentary Secretary for Energy, the Chief Secretary, and the Secretary of Energy, he stated that the initial budget for the project was set at PKR 350-400 million. However, due to effective planning, the project is being completed at a reduced cost of PKR 120-130 million, saving significant public funds.

5000 Homes in Gwadar to Benefit from Solar Energy

Highlighting Gwadar’s importance as the heart of CPEC, CM Bugti directed that at least 5,000 households in Gwadar be prioritized for solar system installations. He stressed that the people of Gwadar should directly benefit from CPEC, as their sacrifices played a crucial role in making the project a reality.

Off-Grid Power Stations for Remote Areas

The Balochistan government is also planning to establish off-grid power stations in areas lacking conventional grid infrastructure. A pilot project will be launched in Nokundi, Buleda, Sui, Sherani, and Mashkail, with further expansion to other districts.

Criticism of QESCO’s Performance

CM Bugti strongly criticized Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO), calling it a “white elephant” due to its inefficiency. He stated that high line losses and rampant corruption within QESCO have exacerbated public grievances.

Mega Solarization Project for Farmers

Discussing the solarization of agricultural tube wells, the chief minister highlighted a PKR 50 billion project initiated in collaboration with the federal government. However, he blamed QESCO’s slow response for delays in some areas. He warned that if QESCO fails to expedite its efforts, the Balochistan government will collaborate directly with farmers to complete the installations. He noted that many farmers are eager to switch to solar energy and break free from QESCO’s dependence.

Commitment to Public Welfare

CM Bugti reaffirmed the government’s dedication to public welfare projects, assuring that more energy initiatives will be introduced to benefit the people of Balochistan. He instructed authorities to ensure the fair and transparent distribution of solar systems so that only deserving households receive them.

Additionally, he appreciated the role of Friends of China Forum Chairman Baizid Khan Kasi for fostering strong cooperation between the Chinese and Balochistan governments.

Earlier, Parliamentary Secretary for Energy Mir Asghar Rind and Additional Secretary of the Energy Department also shared their views on the home solar system program.
