A powerful explosion shook the Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Iran early Saturday, leaving at least 400 people injured, local media reported, as investigations continue into the cause of the incident.

According to Iranian state television, 406 individuals sustained injuries, with dozens rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. So far, no fatalities have been officially confirmed.

The blast occurred around 12:30am local time (2100 GMT/2:00am Pakistan time) and prompted a swift response from emergency services. Rapid intervention teams were immediately deployed, and port operations were temporarily halted to ensure safety and allow rescue operations.

Located in the southern province of Hormozgan, Shahid Rajaee Port is a key strategic hub approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Bandar Abbas, on the northern edge of the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes.

While the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, the semi-official Tasnim News Agency suggested that a fuel tank explosion might be responsible. However, no formal confirmation has been issued by authorities.

Local media indicated that the blast was so intense it may have caused widespread damage within the port area. Authorities have launched a thorough investigation, and security has been tightened across the region to prevent any further incidents.

This explosion raises concerns given the port’s crucial role in Iran’s maritime trade and regional security.
